WHO ARE THEY AND WHAT DO THEY DO?
It is a public body responsible for the operation and management of three state-owned ports on the Mediterranean coast of eastern Spain: Valencia, Sagunto and Gandía.
They have made it their mission to improve competitiveness by providing services. In order to achieve this, they are guided by the following steps:
- Economic sustainability
- Social sustainability
- Environmental sustainability
- Alignment with European transport policies
One of their best projects is the one they have with the European Union, where they manage the flow of energy while the quality is the same, thus reducing energy demand and greenhouse gas emissions and changing the effect it has on the planet.
LOCATION
It has a privileged location being in the center of the Mediterranean coast, in line with the east-west maritime corridor that crosses the Suez Canal and the Strait of Gibraltar.
The most influential areas in Europe are:
- Valenciaport's direct area of influence covers a radius of 350 km, where 51% of Spain's GDP is produced and half of Spain's active population resides.
- As a hub port in the Western Mediterranean, from Valenciaport it is possible to efficiently distribute goods of all kinds within a radius of 2,000 km, a whole network of connections.
- More than 100 regular lines and regional connections.
WHAT ARE THE SERVICES THEY OFFER?
Logistics service: they are in charge of the handling and distribution of maritime goods to the port's hinterland.
Railway service: they are in charge of the administration of railway infrastructures.
Port services: in which we find the different types of services offered.

- Service of reception of waste generated by vessels, which includes: cargo handling service.
Commercial services: which are activities of a commercial nature that do not have the character of port services. This service is included in port services.
Web information service for customers and suppliers: SICYP is a tool for customers and suppliers, whose objective is to simplify the invoicing processes.
Aids to navigation services: They offer the installation and maintenance of signaling, beaconing and other aids to navigation that are used for the approach and access of the vessel to the port or ports. They inspect the operation of maritime signals.
HISTORY OF THE PORT
The Port of Valencia is one of the most important of its kind, being a port of reference not only in Spain but also in the western Mediterranean. It is the fifth most important port in the European Union and one of the 30 most important ports in the world.
This history goes back many centuries and the port of Valencia has been developing at the same time as the city it serves, becoming an element of economic dynamism for the whole region.
ADVANTAGES
In this article we can observe some of the curiosities about this port, since it has a use for holiday tourism, for the transport of goods, and fishing. With this information we could comment that this port encompasses the three sectors: primary, secondary and tertiary. Thanks to this there is an increase in the employment rate, since a great variety of jobs are created, where different types of jobs can be performed in the same sector and it helps people to get a job, whether they have more or less academic level.
1. It is the fifth busiest port in Europe: The Port of Valencia is not only the first in Spain in volume of goods arriving and departing from it, but also occupies a prominent fifth place among the ports of the European Union and is among the 30 most important ports in the world.
2. Generates more than 15,000 jobs: The port of Valencia directly employs some 15,000 employees who make a direct living from providing services of all kinds in the port. In addition, it is estimated that the indirect employment it generates is even greater.
3. It dates back to 1491: The origins of the port of Valencia can be traced back to the time of Ferdinand the Catholic, who in 1491 granted a privilege to the Valencian knight Antoni Joan, through which port operations began, with the fundamental objective of transferring goods between maritime and land means of transport as quickly and economically as possible.
4. Trade with America in 1791: At the time of the colonization of America, all privileges corresponded to the kingdom of Castile, so that until 1791 the port of Valencia was not able to trade with the New World. It was from that moment on that its infrastructure was further developed.
5. 7500 ships pass through it every year: Throughout a year more than 7,500 ships of all types pass through the port of Valencia, which makes an average of 20 ships a day. Among them are ships of all types, from yachts to large cargo ships and fishing vessels.
6. Not only goods: This port does not only stand out for the goods, it is true that it is the main economic activity of the port, but it is not the only one. In it we also find fishing (comparatively little), which is the activity that is done to extract fish; and a very important traffic of travelers, as they pass through it almost 1 million travelers a year, which makes it a great sun and beach tourism.
7. Important passage for cruises: The perfect alternative to know the world in a few days, aboard a ship that has all the comforts and services. It is also noteworthy that the Port of Valencia is, as is the city, closely linked to tourism and is one of the stations of passage of countless cruise ships. 8. Rich architectural heritage: The port of Valencia is not only a great source of income for the city and the economy, but it also has a rich architectural heritage as is the case with the buildings of the Clock or Veles e Vents. The growth and development of the port throughout the twentieth century was the cause of the construction of several buildings of architectural relevance in the first decades of the century within the General Plan for the Expansion and Improvement of the Port of Valencia, which was drafted in 1910 by order of the Ministry of Development:
- The Clock Building, designed in 1914 by Federico Gómez de Membrillera, deputy director engineer of the Port, for a maritime station.
- The sheds, which stand out for their modernist decoration. Designed by Federico Gómez de Membrillera, there were six of them, but only sheds 2, 4 and 5 are still standing.
- The Customs building, by the Valencian architect Enrique Viedma, completed in 1930.
- The Public Wharf, built in 1917 on the customs dock.
- The Commercial Docks, designed around 1911.
9. Very large ships: The facilities of the port of Valencia allow ships up to 300 meters long to dock there, making it one of the few ports in the country where this is possible.
10. Connected by rail and road: As an example of the dynamism of the port of Valencia, it should be noted that it is connected to the Spanish road and rail network by road and rail.

Improving water quality
The Port Authority of Valencia monitors and controls the quality of the water in its ports with the following actions:
- Daily cleaning of the water mirror with a pelican type boat.
- Periodic studies to control water quality, following the requirements of the Water Framework Directive.
- The APV has an Inland Emergency Plan and a Contingency Plan, in addition to the plans of the different concessions, to combat oil spill pollution.
Prevention and control of spills

Improving air quality
The Port Authority of Valencia carries out air quality monitoring through an Air Quality Control Network consisting of:
Air quality control booths, with sensors according to the standard of the Energy, Environmental and Technological Research Center (CIEMAT).
- Three meteorological stations.
- Two particle collectors.
- Computer tools that integrate and manage data in real time.
Improving acoustic quality
The Port Authority of Valencia monitors and controls noise emissions from the port environment:
- Predictive noise maps to assess expected noise levels.
- Static maps of the three ports that provide an empirical measure of noise.
- A network of sound level meters that measure in real time in the area between the ports and the city.
The adequacy of dredging
The Port Authority of Valencia carries out dredging and maintenance work to ensure accessibility and maneuverability.
These actions are carried out using a rigorous procedure that minimizes environmental impact and with specially designed machinery.
The Port Authority of Valencia guarantees the correct management of the waste generated by the activity of concessionary companies and ships in the port facilities.
- Selective collection containers.
- Hazardous waste collection point.
- Waste Transfer Center (W.T.C.).
- MARPOL waste collection and treatment plant, whose service is provided by authorized external companies.
